Software-Defined WAN (SD-WAN) is one of the most rapidly adopted technologies of the past decade. According to a recent study published by Dell’Oro Group, the worldwide sales of SD-WAN technologies are forecasted to grow at double-digit rates over each of the next five years to surpass $3.2 billion in 2024. This growth is certainly a testament to some of the more well-known benefits of SD-WAN technology, such as centralized network policy management, network flexibility and application-aware routing. But we should not overlook how some of these same features can be optimized to boost network security, nor lose sight of the new security considerations that SD-WAN introduces.

With SD-WAN, branch offices are now part of an enterprise’s network topology, with their own Internet egress. Corporate devices can access the Internet via multiple endpoints, adding a layer of complexity to network security. However, if properly configured, SD-WAN can simplify management, help improve security, and decrease threat vectors. In total, SD-WAN greatly improves an organization’s security posture and can ultimately decrease the stress and costs associated with a security intrusion.

In this article, we will review how to optimize your SD-WAN to its full potential for advanced security protection from threats.

Today, your customers operate their IT infrastructure and run applications across many cloud environments. They continue to invest in cloud for easy deployment, flexibility, cost management and performance. Nearly all organizations have embraced a multi-cloud strategy – 93% according to Flexera 2020 State of the Cloud Report. The pandemic sped up transformation initiatives, and technology partners should capitalize on migrations and improving experience. If you have not downloaded it yet, be sure to get The Cloud Journey Guide for insights on how to maximize demand.

SSG Construction, a company renovating facilities on a remote Southern California military base, needed high-speed internet to communicate with its field teams and share real-time data.

With up to 20 employees and 30 subcontractors, SSG needed to keep its teams connected and informed. Often working at sites with no permanent address and outside the cable, fiber, and cell zones, internet connectivity proved tough to find at the speeds SSG needed to operate.

With so many SD-WAN solutions on the market, it’s important to choose the right vendor for your customer’s unique needs. The right provider can mean the difference between an SD-WAN deployment that accelerates innovation and competitive advantage, and one that’s inconsequential. For most multi-site organizations, it’s not a question of whether to adopt SD-WAN, but rather when and how it makes sense for the business.

According to IDG Research , The SD-WAN market is expected to reach $8B by 2021. SD-WAN sales and implementations are growing. The report indicates that adoption rates increased from 35% to 54% over the past two years, with 90% of their respondents saying they are actively researching, piloting or about to upgrade to SD-WAN. And the reason for growth is to solve for a few business challenges, mainly: optimizing networks to support cloud technologies, simplifying network management and improving application performance which all, in turn, help deliver on a better customer experience.

The rate at which technology is evolving is increasing almost exponentially. In the business sector, hardware has given way to software-defined everything, while many on-premises technologies are now offered as a service. Much of the advances in technology over the last few years have been the direct result of the growing ubiquity of the cloud and faster connectivity speeds, both of which have enabled companies to adopt digital transformation technologies to help them work smarter and more efficiently.

For businesses that are reluctant to adopt software-defined wide-area networking (SD-WAN), it’s important to remember that it doesn’t have to be an all-or-nothing migration.  Easing into the many proven benefits of SD-WAN – such as reduced total cost of ownership (TCO), flexible bandwidth options, and unprecedented simplicity of networks and applications – can be a gradual process, without sacrificing existing investments in traditional networking infrastructure.

As hype of SD-WAN dies down, IT leaders are realizing that the technology doesn't need to replace an existing network solution. Instead, SD-WAN serves as a complementary solution, enhancing network functionalities, providing transparency and an overall better end-user experience. Selling partners are finding success by selling SD-WAN as an ancillary service to opportunities that involve existing network solutions like MPLS or for enhancing voice solutions such as UCaaS.
